The Embodiment of Yes!
Our brains know that we are supposed to “Say Yes” to “Follow the Fear” to “have fun,” but our bodies are hardwired for protection. Our nervous system has evolved to keep us out of trouble. The exposure and vulnerability of improvisation can stimulate our nervous systems in such a way that no matter how many times we have heard those words, they are no match for the powerful habits we have developed to protect ourselves. In this workshop, we will use principles drawn from Jean McClelland, the Alexander Technique and Stephen Porges Polyvagal Theory as a springboard for understanding some of the patterns at work in the nervous system. From this common understanding we will then explore movements and games designed to help us shift us from resistance and isolation to receptivity and connection. (3 hours)
Movement for Improvisers
Ever been told you need to be “in your body” and had no idea what that meant? This workshop addresses that question. Through exercises designed to engage the body and imagination, we will focus on simple ways to prepare the body for improvisation as well as ways to expand physical and expressive range. All levels are welcome. We will sweat, breathe, twist and shout so wear comfortable clothing that you can move in. (3 hours)
Improv for Dancers
Comedy improv and dance improvisation are widely practiced separately, but are rarely explored together. Both comedy improvisation and dance improvisation share many similar qualities and aims. Both forms exist in the moment, share a highly ephemeral nature and make use of physical games and structures. Both forms require the skill of being present and the ability to draw on one’s own body and imagination to generate material on the spot. In this workshop, we will use techniques from dance improvisation and comedy improv to explore how listening to what’s happening in the present, can move us forward into the unknown. We will use listening and noticing as motors that allow us to be continually propelled by the reality of what’s happening on stage. This workshop is particularly useful for dancers who want to work with text. A sense of play and a willingness to become part of a larger game will help us find the stream of improvisation and avoid the puddles. (3 hours)
Improvised Dance/Theater Intensive
In this intensive workshop The Raving Jaynes share the techniques we have developed to combine dance and improv. Over the course of several days, participants learn movement exercises and improv games that are then woven together to create a 15- to 20- minute set. Our goal is to create an environment where people feel safe exploring both dance and improv no matter what their background. The workshop culminates in a final showing.
